CHIN FORUM Public Events Commemorating
the 20th. Anniversary of the Chin Forum and the 50th. Anniversary of the Chin Federal Movement
Date: 5th May 2018
Venue: Summit Parkview Hotel, Yangon
A multiple CHIN FORUM activities started in 2017 with the aim to discontinue the international activities of the Ottawa-based FORUM and to register it inside Myanmar (Burma) instead, with younger Chin generations made up of citizens permanently residing in the country. Two Chin Forum Managing Board (CFMB) meetings were convened, as such, during 2017: the first one in Indianapolis during July and the second one in Bangkok during October to discuss and get consensus from all members of the CFMB on the planned reformation of the organization.
Having secured the consensus of each and every member of the CFMB following the two meetings, the Coordinator proceeded to Yangon and met with leaders of the Chin political parties and the CSOs to inform them about our reformation plan and to urge their continuous support both during the reformation period and the new Forum’s endeavor to facilitate the drafting of the Constitution of future Chinland (Chin State) under the new political atmosphere.
These activities were followed by another workshop under the title of “General Discussion on Constitution” conducted by Professors Susan and David Williams, the legal advisers of the CHIN FORUM, attended by leaders of the Chin political parties and the CSOs. The detail of these activities were reported to the CFMB during Oct 2017.
Consequently, the new CHIN FORUM BOARD, was successfully formed on 18 October 2017 and the application for Official Registration was submitted to the authorities in January 2018.
To inform the wider general public about the newly formed CHIN FORUM BOARD inside the country Chin elders, political leaders, students and youth leaders, and other relevant individuals were invited for a dinner party at the Summit Parkview Hotel in Yangon on the 5th. May, 2018 to celebrate the 20th. Anniversary of the formation of the Chin Forum in the exiles and the 50th. Anniversary (Golden Jubilee) of the Chin Federal Movement that started in 1968/69 University academic years in Yangon and later spread to all Chin inhabited areas in the country. The students-lead Chin Federal Movement – the fore-runner of the Chin Forum, resulted in around (50) Chin leaders being thrown into the military’s prisons across the country for demanding a Statehood for the Chins and a Federal Democracy System for the country at that time.
A power point presentation of the brief history of the Chin Struggle for federalism and the two decades of the history of the CHIN FORUM in the exiles was presented to the general public by Salai Kipp Kho Lian. The new CHIN FORUM BOARD members were also introduced to the audience as follows:-
CHIN FORUM BOARD
Salai Cin Lam Mang Chairman
Chin Chin Pek Thang Secretary
AryonOo Cin Khan Lian Member
Salai Cung Lian Thawng Member
Salai Mang Lyan Member
Ki Aung Naing Member
Rosalind Zahau Member
As such the aimed publicity of the formation of the New CHIN FORUM BOARD was fully achieved. However, due to an unfortunate event surrounding Dr. Za Hlei Thang’s funeral that happened to coincided with the event, the attendance of the CHIN FORUM event was somewhat less than expected or planned. Dr. Za Hlei Thang’s body was flown back to Burma from the USA, according to his wish but the arrival of the casket was somewhat delayed and his planned funeral service unfortunately was also had to be postponed to 5th May. That new (funeral) date happened to coincide with the FORUM’s planned date for it’s Anniversary event. Dr. Za Hlei Thang being one of the founding fathers of the CHIN FORUM, some responsible organizers and some prominent members of the CHIN FORUM had to attend his funeral service in Falam on the same day i.e. 5 May, 2018. So some invited guests to the event could not attend as they have no choice but to attend the funeral service in Falam.
Nevertheless, the Chin Forum’s 20th. Anniversary and the 50th. Anniversary of the Chin Federal Movement was successfully convened. When all Chin leaders arrested during the above-mentioned Chin Federal Movement were awarded with Certificates of Honor many were moved as the majority of them had already passed away and only four award winners (namely Pu Lian Uk, Salai Kipp Kho Lian, Pu Dam Kho Nang and Pu Kung Ling) happened to be at the event to receive the Certificates personally. [A few of them are in the exiles] The rest of the certificates were delivered to the family members who attended the event.
Being a moving event as such, the 20th. Anniversary of the CHIN FORUM seriously reminds the general public about the long history of the Chin struggle for a Statehood and the sacrifices their leaders have endured. Also advantageous for the new CHIN FORUM Board was that the political awareness was heightened among the general public with the two interconnected events being convened simultaneously and the importance of the historical tasks of the CHIN FORUM in drafting the future Chin State Constitution was successfully highlighted.
